Vintage Speedway Manufacturing Electric Drill Type 89J, Used: This vintage Speedway Manufacturing Electric Drill is in very good condition. According to a lengthy discussion on “PAPAWS” and “Vintage Machinery”, this company dates back to 1893 under the names: “Independent Pneumatic Tool Co.” (1893); “Thor Power Tool Co.” (1953); “Speedway Manufacturing Co.” (1954) and in association with “Stewart-Warner Corp” (1964 – 1988). They found ads for Speedway Drills in 1926-28 literature. We include a 1947 ad for a “SPEEDWAY 89 209 69” 1/2 inch electric drill that has a keyless chuck. It appears to be the same drill except that ours is a Type 89J and ours has a 1/2 inch capacity Jacobs Keyed chuck with a 1/2”-20 threaded mount. Our drill works well and the chuck is in good condition. It is a single speed with an off on slide switch, 5/64” - 1/2" capacity, 115 volts, 3.5 amp drill motor. The body has remnants of its original red paint. The blue metal tag is worn but very readable. The cord is cracking from age and the cord spring boot is intact. The back handle looks like an aircraft tail and is a little cockeyed, but not broken. It was probably dropped, and 2 new straight machine screws might straighten it. We have not restored this drill in any manner (other than WD-40 on the chuck to test it) as we leave those decisions up to the eventual buyer. This beautiful vintage electric drill is sold with Kent’s Tools 30 Day Satisfaction Guarantee.
