These adapters are useful if you need to mount small diameter buffing wheels, small diameter wire wheels or similar item with a 1/4" center hole. Simply thread the accessory onto a 1/4"-20 screw, then thread it into the adapter. The approximate length that the screw will thread into the adapter is 3/8".
